Pitman Shorthand in the new millenium - 2008/01/26 23:54
My background; 28 years as a network engineer. I have used some of the most advanced computer technologies available to the general public and then some.

As a hobbyist, I currently use 64 bit Linux OS. I currently work as a sales professional.

When I walk into meetings, my goal is to eventually I carry only three items, a 0.5 mm mechanical pencil filled with HB leads, a Staedtler Mars plastic retractable eraser pen and a standard 120 page steno notepad. And yes, I am being completely serious.

In my experience, no other technology can even come close in comparison with Pitman shorthand for accuracy, speed and clarity. Again from my own experience, transcribing notes into the computer after meetings gives me a much needed opportunity to re-enforce the concepts and ideas from the meetings.

In my opinion, any young person NOT learning Pitman shorthand for college or university note-taking today is cheating themselves. Note-taking accurately with speed is a requisite skill in any profession.

The very very kind ladies and gentlemen who keep Pitman shorthand alive and thriving are passing on a tremendous skill that will help all in their note taking.

Thank you for your very kind work. Please NEVER give up.

That being said, I can not seem to locate the copy I once had of the Pitman Shorthand Dictionary (Hardcover red in color), I used to have. Can anyone point me in a direction where I can buy one ?

My shorthand dictionary is ancient but I always keep it to hand. Where to get a new one from I have no idea! you should have looked after yours better

I got 150 or was it 170 can't quite remember, it's so long ago

I still use my shorthand every single day and am always glad I learned and practised the art. I think it deffo is an art!

there are some pitman2k dictionaries available.
go to amazon... author: bryan coombs.
they are just the words and glyphs. no definitions.

i went to the library, got a proper (but sadly out of
print) dictionary using interlibrary loans (grand
sum of two quid). it had 800 pages or so. the loan
period was one month.

i have an elderly and slow scanner attached to my
pc at home. imagine.

Hey, do you think you could possibly translate the shorthand in the journal entry below for me? I'd be forever grateful...

i'm not skilled at shorthand, but i can guess a
partial translation. the first line has 7 glyphs
and the second 4. here's what i think:

1 don't
2 think
3 things
4 will
5 have
6 to be
7 ? clive
8 some
9 ? something with consonants D-N
10 ? this is the consonant S
11 ? something with consonants N-S-L

Heidi

I think I have part of it: "Don't think things will ever be quite the same ......." I don't know about the last two outlines. They look like "don't" and "or", but that doesn't make sense.

I'm assuming that she hasn't used the shortform for "quite" but has used the outline for "qua", halved it for the tee sound and added a tick the, so "quite the".
